To protect the wildlife, no dogs are allowed. Blue heron, egrets, osprey, and occasionally river otters can be seen by the river. The sites are mostly shaded by willows and are relatively close to a large beach for swimming and fishing. This is the only state park campground located near the Russian River. Walk in campsites are within 1/4 mile from the parking lot and there is no running water. There are fire rings, picnic tables, and pit toilets available. Willow Creek Environmental Campground offers 11 primitive campsites. Loss of nesting habitat is due to human development, horses, invasion of European beach grass and predation by ravens, foxes, domestic dogs and cats. The Western Snowy Plover is listed under the Federal Endangered Species Act as a threatened species. No dogs, fires or horses are allowed on the beach as a measure to protect the snowy plovers. The day use area includes a boardwalk that overlooks a classic sandy beach. Campfire and Junior Ranger programs are held in the summer months when staff is available.
